WHO?
Pretty sure you all know who Grinspoon are by now, one of the original Triple J Unearthed darlings who've gone on to play practically every festival and venue around the country, had a few hits along the way and became darlings to bogans all around the country with their easy to swallow rock choruses. Now they've set themselves up their own label imprint and have this 13 track album ready to unleash.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
Whether a deliberate attempt to try and brush off a bit of that commercial 'glow' the last few releases have carried, and sound 'raw', or a mastering engineer asleep on the job.. (or my speakers playing horrible tricks on me), the first thing I found hard to digest about this album is the way it sounds. Perhaps not overly noticeable if you just listen on it's own, but play it up against some other recordings and something appears to be up with the way it's mastered, I'm no expert, so all i'll say is, it sounds weird. Musically, well there are a few moments where a chorus here and there sticks, but it's pretty standard Grinspoon fodder, if you have been a fan over the last few albums, then I can't see you being disappointed much, on the other side of the fence, I don't really think it has the spark to attract anyone new to the fold. One listen to 'Passenger' and i think Rage Against The Machine might want their riff from 'Wake Up' back. 'Comeback' will no doubt appear on the next Bundy Rum Rock Anthems type compilation, but as a lead single doesn't really match some of their singles from the past. While it's better than some of the other 'big names' of Aus rock, it's no return to form, or trip back to the sounds of earlier in their career.
