THE BAND
What’s the story behind the band name?

The name came from a He Is Legend song. It’s a good song and a fun name.

When did the band begin and how did it come about?
The band started about 2 years ago, started by our Drummer Daniel and Guitarist Shane and the original singer. They started jamming and working on songs for a bout a year, recorded a couple of demos and sent them to me to help them out (I was doing Sightline Records and Strike3 with my wife at the time), and I liked it heaps, sussed them some shows and hoped it would all take off. The singer was a bit over zealous and booked a bunch of stuff off of his own back which didn’t work with what I had booked with the other guys, so they got rid of him, and a few months later I made a joke about joining the band because they still didn’t have anyone, and they asked me to try out, and here we are today. The band as you hear it has been a bout a year in the making, with Joey Jones joining us on bass a few months ago after the departure of our last bass player, also named Joe.

How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street?
It’s just noise.

What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it…
The new album is called Betrayed and has been a year in the making and a lot has happened in that year and we just kept at it until we what we were happy with. It was recorded over the space of a week at Melbourne Records and it was long nights and days of being at our jobs then back into the studio for another long night. Shane and I stayed at the studio to make sure we could do all we could.

What image do you think / hope your music conveys?
This is an interesting one. I just hope that people can see what we are doing and why we’re doing it. We have a lot of anger and aggression and other feelings in all of us, and it is the best way for us to get it all out of our systems. Shit like that is bad when it is all bottled up. We’re not here to be cool, just fucking loud.

In five years time the band will be…
Washed up and listening to beats. But seriously, who knows. Hopefully just making music together still (I’ll be in my mid 30’s by then!).

OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it?

I was dating a chick in highschool, And he brother played in a band called “Hammergasket”, who were a metal band pretty much, and I used to chill with him and watch them jam and shit when I wasn’t trying to score with his sister, and they played a show at a local venue and played a bad religion cover, and asked me to sing part of it, so I did. He started to teach me guitar also, but told me I sucked and to stick to vocals, so again, I did.

What was your first band name and what style did you play?
My first band was called Without Reason until we got contacted by one of the dudes from ‘Without A Reason’ (A western suburbs hardcore band) asking us nicely to reconsider out name, so we changed it to ‘For No Reason’, and it was basically a Pennywise/Frenzal Rhomb rip off band.

Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection
Pig Destroyer – Terrifyer. My intro to amazing Grindcore. Such a good record.
Darkest Hour – Undoing Ruin. This is just my favourite record. So well written in so many ways
Refused – The Shape of Punk to come. Changed my idea of music in so many ways.

Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given
A singing teacher once told me he coulnd’t help me and that I should never come back. I took it, and look where I am now. Hahaha!

Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road
We just toured with The Devil Wears Prada, and I would kill to tour with tht band again. Seriously the best fucking dudes I have met from a big US band ever. I would tour the wold with them and never get sick of the guys. I would love to tour with Every Time I Die. Such an amazing band, and the dudes I have spoken to in that band, are rad dudes. I think that that is the most important thing. And I have a man-crush on Keith Buckley. He is the modern day Elvis.

Favourite song of your group?
I would say ‘The Kids That No-one Wanted’. A rad/fun song with a really good message. It is a song about youth suicide and how we need to tell people we care and that we love them because we want them to stay with us.

The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is
Seeing what the new merch looks like printed.

The thing you least look forward to before a tour is
The Driving. I am an old man, with old man bones and old man ways. I need to earn more money so we can fly like rich rockstar assholes!

When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing?
Hanging out with my wife and our 2 Chihuahua’s, Nibbler and Peanut. Eating rad food and antique shopping in the Dandenongs. Seriously.

ON THE STAGE / ROAD
What gear do you use?

I use a Shure Beta58a with “CLAG” engraved on it.

Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why?
We just played in Brisbane for the first time as a band and that ruled. Purely for breakfast at Alibi Room. Make sure you suss it and get the truckers breakfast, but make sure you’re not a pussy like me and don’t finish it!

The best show you’ve ever played was… and why?
We just played the Manning Bar in Sydney with The Devil Wears Prada to 800 kids, and it ruled beyond belief. So many kids, so much good atmosphere. It just ruled in so many ways.

Who hogs the stereo in the van the most?
Me. Deadest for sure. I try to drive all the time and suss what I want to listen to.

After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there?
That would be me, and it would be the vast array of t-shirts I have collected along the way and all the food wrappers from all of the crap I have eaten.

Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it?
I think we’re all pretty good on the road. Shane is a Vegan, so his ass is pretty rank most of the time. But probably me and my stress levels.

Most embarrassing moment on tour?
Shit doesn’t embarrass me except playing bad.

Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever…
Our TM/Merch guy Pav drank 2 full glasses of Maple syrup for $15. 1 For the TDWP guys for $5 and then double or nothing from the owner of the Alibi Room. Pure fucking gold. He almost threw it back up halfway through the second glass, and it would have been followed by about 6 eggs, 4 rashers of bacon and 2 pieces of toast. Everyone was in tears and almost throwing up themselves.

Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider?
Nando’s Hot Chicken (w/ Chips) and a case of Dr Pepper.

RIGHT NOW
What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now?

Jay-Z – The Black Album. Holy fuck wow. What more can I say?

Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why…
Hopeless from Melbourne. Amazing, emotional and honest hardcore punk.

If you could change one thing about the music industry today, what would it be?
Change the laws regarding All Ages shows in clubs in Melbourne. It just fucking sucks that kids van enjoy a gnarly show in places like Sydney and not have to worry about whether they can get in or not. I mean, I used to take my sisters to shows when I was just 18, and I couldn’t do that kind of thing now because I wouldn’t get into an under 18’s show, and all ages shows in non club venues cost so much money to put on, so often kids miss out. Support all ages hardcore!

As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to…
Eat chicken nuggets and chips with Ribeena while I do a count out of the tour merch..
