New Zealand rock outfit Devilskin were recently in the counrty showcasing their latest album ‘We Rise‘. It went Gold after two weeks and sat at #1 for three weeks in the local NZ charts. Expect more Australian shows to be announced in the near future for the band on the back of the recent showcases. They’ll also support Slash early next year in NZ. This week the band take on our On The Record questions to tell us more about the album. Expand this post to take a read of their answers.
Tell us about the release title.
We named the album ‘We Rise’ as it’s the title of one of our favourite live tracks that never made it to the album. We figured it was an apt title for where we are at and with the title track not being on the record we thought it’d help create interest in the next album.
Tell us about the artwork.
The artwork was put together by our sick friend Barny Bewick. An extraordinarily talented graphic wizard who totally gets our band. We wanted it to be striking and subtly aggressive.
What format/s will it be released on and how will it be packaged?
CD in a deluxe jewelcase, LP on vinyl with a bonus single. Very smart packaging!
Who will it be released through, and when?
The Album is out now via all digital platforms including iTunes. We are just working out the details of physical distribution for Australia. The album is also available directly from the band www.devilskin.co.nz
Tell us about the studio and why you chose to record there?
We recorded the bulk of the album at York Street studios in Auckland simply because its such an epic studio and our producer was more than comfortable there. We added a string section who recorded their parts at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth UK (Queen, Black Sabbath, Budgie, Judas Priest).
Tell us about the producer / engineer and why you chose to record with them?
Clint Murphy produced and engineered the album. We love his work, he loved the band and we all got on extremely well. He has a great ear and understood perfectly what we wanted to achieve with the album.
Did you go into the writing process with a clear direction in mind?
Our only clear direction was to be true to ourselves and write the best songs we could.
Were you listening to anything in particular during the writing / recording process that influenced the songs at all?
No, personally I tried to clear my mind of other influences and focus on my own ideas with no distractions.
Were there any albums you were referencing to aim for a certain type of sound production wise?
Not really again we wanted to capture an original and organic creation free from too much influence.
How long did you spend in the studio recording?
About 4 weeks.
Tell us a little about the recording process the band used?
We demoed everything first so we could really critique it, by the time it came to tracking we had the arrangements and everything sorted. Drums first then bass, guitars and vocals and piano last. Pretty standard really.
Was this any different to previous processes you have used?
Nope. We keep it pretty simple and straightforward.
Any guests involved? if so, who.. and what did they do?
We got our guitarist Nail’s 4 year old daughter Layla to chant a spooky rhyme on the album. We had a sample of a late friends’ dolphin impersonation we put on the track ‘Never See The Light’ which was a tribute to him. Oh yeah and an English string section.
Any particular equipment outside your usual live gear used in the process?
We used as much of our own gear as possible (Gibson/Dean/Marshall). Nail may have used a few of the studios sweet guitars but the rest of it was all our gear.
Any memorable studio moments?
Plenty! You may have to wait for the DVD!
Any additional tracks recorded that didn’t make the cut but may see the light of day sometime?
None recorded but we did have to cut 7 songs to fit on the album so the next studio album is mostly written already.
What track/s are you most looking forward to playing live?
‘Violation’. Its manic intensity is contagious!
How would you compare the final product to previous releases?
Its honestly light years better than our first singles production and recording wise as well as aggressively sophisticated!
Anything else you want to say or about the release?
We are very proud of this album and the reaction we have had to it. We were blown away when it debut at #1 on the NZ album charts and it remained at #1 for 3 weeks and for it to be certified gold after 2 weeks was just freakin crazy. To top it off our 20 date NZ tour sold out. Come see what the fuss is all about!
