This Friday, Deez Nuts release their much anticipated new album ‘Bout It‘ via UNFD. It’s already been a busy year for the band, they kicked things off on the Boys Of Summer Tour, then straight over to Europe for dates with The Ghost Inside, they’ll be touring South East Asia in a few weeks. You can order a signed CD online [Here] or digital version via iTunes [Here]. The band will also be doing a signing at the UNFD offices in Richmond from 5pm this Thursday alongside Northlane prior to their show at Plastic later that night. We caught up with JJ from the band to answer our Hotseat questions this week. Expand this post to take a read of his answers.

Favourite show you’ve played in your hometown : The Destroy Music Tour at Thebarton Theatre last year with Amity and IKTPQ.

THE BAND
How did the band first come to exist? Me having too much time on my hands and instruments lying around. It’s true, idle time is the devils play thing.
How long has the band been going? Started in early 2007 sooo…. 6 years. Fuck.
Any particular story behind the name? Listen to too much Hip-Hop.
What’s your most recent release? Tell us a little about it. Our most recent release was actually a DVD with 2 previous albums that were no longer in print included. It’s a good watch but our new album is about to drop and its BY FAR our best work to date. I’m extremely proud of it, and to be honest, I’ve never said that about any of our other releases!
Got a personal stand out achievement of your band to date? Getting asked by Freddy to tour with Madball and getting asked by Jamey Jasta to sign to Stillborn, both were equal standout moments to me. Blew my mind.

OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? In school, much like in life, it got me out of doing real work. That’s when I fell in love with it.
Any particular band / album or song that you personally credit as a major influence? Band = Deftones. Album = Ready To Die by Biggie Smalls. Song = Let’s Stay Together by The Reverend Al Green.
Your first band name, and what style did you play? We were called CUR, started around 13. Had a punk rock / grunge / nu metal vibe. Confusing I know. Can’t understand why it never took off.
Most prized music related item you own? Every release I’ve been a part of making. I’m quite proud of my 16 strong discography.
When you’re not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? To be honest in the past few years working with three different acts has left almost literally no time for non band related activities. But what little spare time I have I part own / run a clothing company (www.1loveapparel.com) and do whatever it takes to achieve altered states of consciousness.
The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is… Not being able to sleep in my own bed for the next few months…. oh no wait that sucks huge amounts of dick. I always look forward to playing shows the most, that’s what we do it for.
The thing you least look forward to before a tour is… Living out of a suitcase.

ON THE STAGE
When on offer, what’s your one must have item on the rider? The things I want most aren’t very realistic. So I ask for gin.
Favourite place you’ve toured… and why? Japan, cause it’s the furthest thing from what’s familiar to me I’ve ever experienced. Opening yourself and your mind to new things and new experiences is one of the huge pluses of the tour life and Japan forces you to do that round the clock.
Most memorable show you’ve played? and why? Probably with Full Force 2011 in Germany. Played to round 15’000 people in the daytime and nearly all of them knew the words and the sing-along was deafening. It was the moment we realised we were a real band I think haha.
Got a favourite song to play live? At this point I love playing a new song we haven’t released yet, it’s fun and fresh for us and its unpredictable as to how the crowd will respond and you have to work 10 times harder to get them going with shit they don’t know so when there vibing it feels like you earned it.
Any embarrassing on stage moments come to mind? Not really….. one time a kid on stage ripped half my singlet/tank and I had to play the whole of the set looking like Tarzan. that wasn’t that cool.
Any pre-show rituals? Drinking from when we wake up ’til show time has become our unintentional ritual. Seems to work for us.
What do you find is the hardest aspect of touring in a band today? Harsher penalties for throwing TV’s out of hotel windows. It’s not like the 70′s and 80′s when you just got a slap on the wrist, now days you could do serious time, its the end of an era. But no seriously missing loved ones due to being away so much is the only hard part of touring. Anyone who whines about anything else should take a look at how good they have it, stop being a little bitch and enjoy the privilege of getting to do this shit.

RIGHT NOW
Last song you listened to? Scared Of The Dark – Lower Than Atlantis
Last album you acquired? 1999 – Joey Bada$$
Which band or album is currently on high rotation? Live Love A$ap – A$ap Rocky
Tell us an up and coming band or artist you think we should go and listen to right now? Survival, recently was on tour with them and they blew me away every night.
What’s on the cards for the next few months for the band? Releasing our new album ‘Bout It’, and a bunch of other cool shit as well.

IF ONLY…
You can pick any one album for your band to cover in full, what would it be and why? “The Logical Song” by Supertramp. I’ve always been obsessed with song structure and I’ve always thought that song would lend itself really well to being done in a punk rock/hardcore fashion structurally and lyrically.
You can pick any one band / artist to cover one of your albums in full, what would it be, and why? I’d have A$ap Rocky and his production team cover our new album “Bout It” cause the 2 things I’m the most exited about musically right now is our new album and his new album. Makes sense to wanna see how the two would work combined.
One band you wish you were able to see live but never had the chance? Ryan Adams, whenever he’s been to Australia I’ve inevitably been on tour and if I’ve seen he’s playing nearby when I’m overseas its always just out of reach. Breaks my heart because all my friends say his live shows are incredible. Plus “Rock and Roll” and “Easy Tiger” are to of my favourite albums of all time.
One venue you have yet to play that you would love to? Madison Square Garden NYC. Should be ticking that box shortly though…
The chance comes up to fill in for a member of a band for one tour, which band would it be, and why? I have absolutely no interest in filling in in any other bands. That would be like getting called in to work on your day off.
A headline tour overseas comes up, tell us two bands you’d take along to support your band. This has happened a few times and I can tell you two bands we DID take. The Ghost Inside and The Amity Affliction cause there some of our best friends in the world and amazing bands to boot.
