REDD KROSS – Researching The Blues

Comeback albums generally stink, but when you have the pedigree of this band it’s a safe bet the stink will be delightful, and it is. This is a bright rock ‘n roll album loaded with hooks and a nice throwback to era’s gone by. The more you listen, the more you love, every track is a winner and the standouts are sensational. Some of the harmonies they pull off, most modern rock bands wouldn’t dare try. One probably more suited to older listeners, but don’t let that put you off giving it a
crack.

MILLIONS – Failure Tactics

These Chicago folk know how to make a noise or two. Second full length, but the first to hit my ears. It makes for a good listen when taking the tracks individually, any more than a few in a row and my mind tends to wander with this style. There’s quite a bit to digest, never a bad thing though. Abrasive and really in your face, fans of the likes of The Nation Blue and Coerce should look this mob up. Best played loud too. Gotta be in the right mood though or it doesn’t gel. Worth a shot though.

AVERICE – Pig In The Python

Out of the Gold Coast hail this outfit who’ve been doing the rounds for a few years now. They serve up 14 tracks on this album of tight and punchy punk rock. Clearly inspired by that token Fat Wreck style the great thing about their sound is that it is loaded with Aussie flavour. Especially vocally, they haven’t gone down that path of trying to sound American. Highlights include the very NOFX’ish ‘God Shaved The Queen’, the speedy ‘Football In The Forest’ and early number ‘Lament’. Pretty much for fans
of any fast 90′s style punk rock.

OFF! – OFF!

Modern day kings of the short, no bullshit song. One after the other, its exactly what you get with this album. The longest track clocks in at 1:36 so there are no trimmings, just the good stuff. They’re a band many can take a lesson from, and these tracks follow on perfectly from the First Four EP’s. If you dug that, then you’ll dig this. If you want some gloss free punk rock and are yet to hear these guys, then you are in for a treat. It’s a must have.

FOR ALL THOSE SLEEPING – Outspoken

One of a tonne of current bands who don’t know which pond to dip their feet into, and while variety is a good thing, it’s not even close when you blend the shit this band is trying to. The blender would reject it, sadly Fearless Records have not. One second it’s pop punk, the next its gang vocals, next it’s horrible screaming.. and it goes on. It was one of those albums I just had to listen right through to see just how bad it got. I’m glad I did, because I got a good chuckle out of it.

HAND OF MERCY – Last Lights

There’s plenty of local acts out there at the moment doing this strain of hardcore so standing out can be a bit of an issue, but not for these Sydney guys. An impressive full length with good variety on offer, which is one thing that has them standing out. The big production helps too. For ears like mine, vocals that you can understand are a big thing and they tick that box too. They’ve definitely delivered an album that will leave their mark. Definitely one for the mosh / hardcore fans out there. Get on if you aren’t already.
