Sydney five-piece, Polaris recently unleashed their debut album, ‘The Mortal Coil‘ via Resist Records.
Good news for the band this week with the album debuting at #6 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and #2 in the Australian Artists Album Chart.
Currently in Europe on the Never Say Die Tour for the rest of this month, the band will play Unify Festival in January and head out with Parkway Drive on their all but sold out ‘A Decade Of Horizons‘ tour straight after.
You can listen to the album below. Order a copy from iTunes [Here], or physically [Here].
They recently shared a music video for the track ‘Lucid‘
Vocalist, Jamie Hails comments;
“Lucid came to us fairly late in the writing period. That big riff that drops in the middle of the song was actually written for a different song that Ryan was working on which didn’t make it to the album, but we loved the riff so we pulled it out and constructed a new song around it that was totally different to the original – really aggressive and full of this dark adrenaline, and straight away it became the album opener!“
While drummer Daniel Furnari adds,
“Lucid is a song about realising you’ve backed yourself into a mental corner that you have to work your way out of. I think by the end of the writing period we had all at one stage or another in our own time reached a bit of a breaking point where we became pretty drained and disillusioned with the creative process, which is somewhat inevitable when you’re working consistently on something for a long period of time and putting pressure on yourself to make things that you like. A few of us were getting kind of lost in the whole thing and beginning to lose a lot of faith in ourselves, and this song is about trying to process and understand that negative mindset.“

‘The Mortal Coil‘ was recorded in Polaris‘ self-made studio in Mollymook, NSW, where they shipped American tandem, Carson Slovak and Grant MacFarland of Atrium Audio to oversee the recording. No strangers to success themselves, the duo most recently produced, engineered and mixed August Burns Red’s Grammy-nominated album, ‘Found In Far Away Places‘.
Guitarist Rick Schneider talks about the recording of the album.
“Recording The Mortal Coil was unlike any studio experience we’d had before, both in location and environment. A few hours south of Sydney we rented a holiday house, not knowing how well it would suit our needs. We managed to set up two work stations and quickly found ourselves in a focused, yet highly relaxed work environment. While stress would inevitably makes its way into the process, the end result is something we are all very proud of, and I’ll personally always look back on that month fondly.“
