A BIT ABOUT IT (What they say)
The Understatement are five ordinary guys from the Western Suburbs of Sydney. Since forming in 2007, the band have been hard at work playing as many shows as they possibly can (including festivals such as Black Stump, Big Exo Day &
Easterfest) and have made many new friends and fans along the way. Influenced by artist such as Underoath, Emery, Saosin, Anberlin, Haste the Day & August
Burns Red, The Understatement combine heavy guitar riffs, epic soaring vocal melodies & an abundance of harmonies to create their own unique blend of heavy alternative rock. In 2008 the band recorded and independently released
their debut EP titled "So Blind" which has received much positive feedback. At the end of 2009 the band took an extended break to re-direct goals
and write new material. After a minor lineup change The Understatement are back in 2010 with new management & a professional attitude. Having already recorded their second EP at Electric Sun Studios with Shane Edwards & Dave Petrovic earlier this year, the boys have been hard at work playing shows, promoting and organising a launch date/follow up tour. The EP is titled "Violent Words with Violent Ends" and will hopefully be released in early September.
A BIT ABOUT IT (What We Say)
A promising little EP from this local outfit, they've spent a bit of work in the studio at the ever popular Electric Sun Studios in Western Sydney, the production is top notch and very slick without being over the top. They sit in a genre
that has really been done to death in the last few years, but do manage to hold your attention enough to not just be another scrap on the pile. Like most bands in this whole 'sing / scream' genre, I think they are at their best when they
are actually singing, and often the attempts at screaming / growling / squawking.. whatever the latest term for it is, tend to bring the song down a few notches. Something i've never really gotten, and probably never will, bands who have
dudes who can really sing well, dropping in parts that sound like someones just shoved a clamp around their balls... anyway.. thankfully these guys don't go too far down that path, and it doesn't take too much away from the songs. One of the better local acts in the genre I've heard. No surprise that 'It's Ok Pluto, I'm Not A Planet Either' is the stand-out track for me with clean vocal all the way throughout. Overall though, it is a quality EP, and will certainly impress those who are right into the genre, they offer
enough variety to not bore you, and i think they definitely have a future, perhaps
an even brighter one with a little less screaming.
RECOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE
Saosin, Underoath and other part melodic / part sound like your getting stabbed
type bands.
