Hometown:
Skinnskatteberg, SWEDEN
Hometown is best known for:
Systemair, a company that makes products for ventilation that half
of the population in the municipality works for, Körstämman a festival
for choirs that was held for over 20 years until a couple a years
ago and of course the almighty No Fun At All.
Best venue in your hometown:
Skinnskatteberg or Skin taxed mountain as you would say in English
only has a population of approx 5000 people so there isn’t much
of a live scene. No Fun At All earliest shows were held at the local
youth recreation center. There was this good venue, Godtemplarlokalen
an old movie theater but like everything else good it was demolished.
THE BAND
How long has the band been going?
NFAA was formed back in 1991 as a power trio with me Mikael on guitar,
Jimmie Olsson, drums and vocals and Henrik Sunvisson, bass. We released
a demo tape in 1992 called Touchdown before getting in contact with
Burning Heart. Two of the songs from Touchdown were later recorded
with Ingemar on vocals´ Days in the sun´ and ´Can’t go far´.
Many lineup changes along the way?
As soon as the MCD ´Vision´was released in 1993 Jimmie decided to
call it a quit and focus on his other band Sober. The band was put
on ice for a couple of months until Ingemar on vocals and Kjell
on drums was recruited. Me and Ingemar had played together before
in a band called Daddy Likes Men so I was familiar with his skills.
Kjelle played in band called Merryland together with Christer. So
after a couple of shows as four-piece band we decided to ask Christer
if he was up for it. That line-up was intact until 1999 when Henrik
quit the band and Steven Neuman joined in. And that’s line-up were
looking at today.
How would you describe your sound to the average person
on the street?
I guess I would I say: Imagine Ramones on speed with the So Cal
sun shining on 5 polar bears from artic Sweden.
What's your most recent release? Tell us a little about
it...
In 2008 we released ´Low Rider´, a collection of songs that goes
back sound wise to the heydays of NFAA. Full throttle full speed
ahead melodic punk-rock up your alley.
Got a favorite track that you have released so far?
Beat ém down.
OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously
about playing it?
The first musical experience that really knocked me down was when
I got Kiss ´Destroyer´ on my 8th birthday. That record really rocked
my world and started a life long love for music. But I didn’t start
play any instrument until I was like 15 years old. But I always
hanged out at my friends’ rehearsal place listening to them playing
80´s metal dreaming about starting my own band. I started to learn
the bass to become their bass player, but I was more interested
in head banging than learning the actual songs so I got fired. Then
I managed to borrow an acoustic guitar from my neighbor and learned
the power-chord. I had drifted away from the metal stuff and was
listening more to punk-rock. A friend taught me a bunch of Ramones
and Sex Pistols songs that I hammered out from day to night. It
was a nice feeling when you came to the conclusion that you actually
could write your own songs and they started to sound ok! The album
that really showed the direction that I wanted to play was Bad Religion
´Suffer`. I remember the feeling when I first heard it; I fucking
loved from day one!
What was your first band name, and what style did you play?
The first band I recorded anything with was Janne & Danne, we played
some lame punk-rock sung in Swedish or maybe Disthrash, some kind
extremely bad thrash metal, I don’t remember. My first live show
was with this band called The Lobotomys; we played only punk-rock
covers with a fanatic crowd of friends’ pogoing. It was magic to
perform and still is.
Most prized music related item you own?
My record collection.
The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is:
Catering.
The thing you least look forward to before a tour is:
Sound check.
When you’re not doing band related stuff, what are you usually
found doing?
Lifting weights, playing chess, running, reading books, listening
to music and eating.
ON THE STAGE / ROAD
Best rider item you've ever received without requesting it?
People with no connection to the bands playing sitting in the backstage
room being a little bit drunk and feeling free to drink more beer.
Also knows as Logesork.
Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why?
We just toured Brazil in January and did 5 shows and it was amazing.
The crowds are just crazy and I really love the vibe of Brazil.
It was the first tour outside Europe in 10 years and it just felt
fucking great.
Most memorable show you've played? and why?
We opened the Roskilde festival in Denmark in 1996 and we were worried
if people would show up, so when the doors opened to the festival,
the tent got packed to the max and we performed one of our best
shows ever.
Worst 'guilty pleasure' artist / song you've come across
on a bandmates iPod?
I don’t if there have been any ‘guilty pleasure’ cases recently
that I can think of. But when I played my own best-of compilation
of Captain Beefheart in the bus, people just fucking hated it. They’re
not exactly happy when I play my high-life/afro beat music either.
I’m a happy as long as Ignite is off the stereo, can’t stand that
singer.
Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and
what is it?
Everyone is on heroin and crystal meth.
RIGHT NOW
Where are you?
I’m sitting in my flat in Hammarbyhöjden, Stockholm answering this
interview, having a day off from work. Outside it’s snow and more
snow. Having a little of abstinence from not being able to watch
anymore of the Olympic games in Vancouver. Now I’m going to watch
the’ The winds of war’ with Robert Mitchum.
What's the last song you listened to?
Just got a full preview of the new Frankly Lee album from Mathias.
So I have listened to the album over and over again this morning
to come back to him with my opinion regarding single and stuff like
that. Great fun. It fucking rocks!!
Which band or album is currently rockin' your world?
My absolute favorite at the moment is the new Midlake album-´The
courage of others´. It’s just mesmerizing from start to end. It’s
been a long time since I fell in love with a new album but this
one does it. I like the fact that it sounds pretty much the same
all the way through the album and got this great seventies production
to it. Folk-rock at its best!!
Tell us a band we should all go and listen to right now?
I think everyone should check out this Swedish band called Graveyard,
they have one self-titled album out and they will release a new
one this spring.70’s rock at its best, with a fantastic singer.
They are blitzing Wolfmother off the stage any day of the week. |
